Magic Johnson recently announced his ownership (via Twitter) of the new Los Angeles club that will debut in the 2017 MLS season. With all these expansion teams joining the league recently, it seems as if the MLS believes that adding more teams will magically bring in talented players.
I mean, does anyone actually think the MLS is a good league? It can't even entice a 36 year old Frank Lampard to come (he's currently in negotiations to extend his stay at City). It's as if the Englishman realized that he's STILL got it, and is now currently begging not to be thrown away to the recycling bin of football. Because that's what the MLS is, the recycling bin of football.
When I presented this opinion on Twitter, I got a number of responses in defense of the MLS from some hardcore supporters of the league. Here are the most common responses I received, with my rebuttal following.
"We got Thierry Henry"
Yes. You do have Thierry Henry, but have you seen the guy play? The man is going 15% and is still the best player in the MLS. He doesn't even celebrate his goals because why would he? Do you celebrate when you dunk over your friend's 7 year old brother? Point is that the MLS has one world class player, who smartly transferred to the US in order to get paid bank without having to move a finger. So who's the real winner here?
"Fine. But we got Michael Bradley."
Whenever I hear Michael Bradley I slightly chuckle (I roll on the floor laughing when someone brings up Jozy Altidore, but that's another story). Really? Michael Bradley? Stop. Just look at his performance in the World Cup and tell me with a straight face he's not overrated. Go ahead I'll wait.
"Clint Dempsey. Second most goals in US history and played in the EPL. Solid player"
Ok, I'm a man that realizes solid players when I see one. Clint had some good years in England, and even better years for the national team. But have you searched this man on YouTube? He's a rapper. A rapper. Do you really want your best player dropping these types of horrible tracks every couple months or so? The music video itself gave me goosebumps because of how totally embarrassing it is. I'm even more disappointed in the other guys in the video. Friends don't let friends do stupid things. Smh.
"What about Bradley Wright-Phillips? Most goals in a season in the MLS and looking at possible call-up to the England national team"
What? Bradley Wright-Phillips has the most goals in a season in MLS history? There must be a reason why I never heard about this. Possibly because not even American sports networks care about the MLS. He couldn't even outplay his own brother. Shaun is 10x better, and he plays on QPR. You just know when you're the top scorer in your league, and your more talented brother is seen as a fluke in another, something is wrong with your league.
